The Universidade de Vigo (UVIGO) is playing an active role in the MRV4SOC, contributing to the development of standardised tools for measuring soil organic carbon (SOC) and greenhouse gas (GHG) balances.
As part of the consortium, UVIGO brings scientific expertise to improve the quantification of soil carbon. The university offers a specific focus on ensuring that methodologies are robust, harmonised, and applicable across diverse environmental conditions.
Indeed, researchers are involved in refining approaches that integrate field-based soil measurements, data analysis, and modelling techniques, and lastly, improved estimation of carbon stock changes.
This contribution is key to reducing uncertainties in carbon accounting and ensuring that results are scientifically sound and comparable across regions.
Additionally, it contributes to the lack of standardised methods for quantifying SOC and GHG emissions by helping design methodological frameworks that can be replicated and scaled, supporting consistency at the EU level. Through this work, the university helps bridge the gap between research and implementation, ensuring that developed tools are not only scientifically rigorous but also practical for use in policy and land management contexts.
At the same time, UVIGO supports the creation of transparent and trustworthy carbon accounting practices. Its participation underscores the importance of academic research in addressing climate challenges and positions the university as a key contributor to European efforts to enhance soil carbon sequestration and sustainability.
