MRV4SOC joined forces with over 50 experts, professionals, and soil enthusiasts to celebrate World Soil Day at the “Suelos Vivos” event, hosted by FEUGA – Fundación Empresa Universidad Gallega. This vibrant gathering, dedicated to promoting sustainable soil management practices, showcased groundbreaking initiatives shaping the future of soil health.
A Standout Contribution from MRV4SOC
One of the event’s highlights was an engaging panel discussion featuring Paula Pérez Rodríguez, a soil scientist and Juan de la Cierva Incorporación Researcher at Universidade de Vigo. Representing MRV4SOC, Pérez Rodríguez shared valuable insights into the project’s innovative approaches to monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) of soil organic carbon (SOC) across 14 demo sites in Europe. She emphasized MRV4SOC’s commitment to developing standardized methodologies for reliable voluntary carbon markets in Europe, while also exploring carbon sequestration in soil as a critical tool in the fight against climate change.

A Collaborative and Inspiring Event
The event culminated in the dynamic Soil Hub Fair, an interactive networking space filled with posters, flash talks, stands, and webinars. This forum encouraged idea-sharing and fostered collaborations among participating projects. Notable initiatives included Mar2protect, AGROSUS_HE, SoildiverAgro, DRYAD, ALERT-PFAS, FIREPOCTEP+, SUS-SOIL, and AF4EU, all of which contribute to the advancement of sustainable soil management and soil health.

Moving the Needle on Soil Health
World Soil Day 2024 was a powerful reminder of the critical importance of soil to the planet’s health and sustainability. MRV4SOC, through events like “Suelos Vivos,” continues to champion innovative research and collaboration, underscoring the potential of soil management as a cornerstone for environmental resilience.
