These are transitional environments from rural to urban land uses. They surround urban centres and their boundaries are porous and not defined. Maintaining crucial ecosystem services in peri-urban areas is crucial for sustainable urban development.
SPurban14 – Guardiamar, Spain
This demo site is a green corridor located in southern Spain. In April 1998, it was affected by a large mine spill that caused a great quantity of waste to reach the water of the Agrio and Guardiamar rivers. More than 4600 ha of agriculture and pasture land were affected by the incident. Following the spillage, 4 main amendments were applied in the area: red soils, compost and manure, limestone, and afforestation. The research in this demo site focuses on the monitoring of soil organic carbon and the status of these remediation measures.
