Today, 16 December 2025, the EU Soil Monitoring Law, aiming for healthy soils by 2050, enters into force. Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) is a key indicator of this monitoring framework to improve soil health assessment, which contributes to climate resilience and food security.
The MRV4SOC project is implementing a hybrid modelling approach assimilating in-situ and remote sensing data into process-based models to monitor the effects of Carbon farming practices on increasing SOC through Tier-3 methodologies.
Last week, MRV4SOC partners met in Florence at a moment when results are accelerating and the work on the ground is becoming increasingly tangible. The meeting offered one more opportunity to connect the dots between methodologies, data and applications, as the demonstration sites continue to advance their findings and deliver meaningful insights.
A highlight of the meeting was the visit to the Fagna experimental farm, where discussions moved from models and indicators to soil, fields and practices. Walking the site helped ground the project’s work in its real context, reinforcing the link between scientific monitoring and the realities faced by farmers and land managers.

Organised by CREA, the event captured the spirit of MRV4SOC at this final stage: focused, dynamic, and driven by concrete results that are quickly taking shape.
