The MRV4SOC consortium met in Oslo, Norway, on June 11-12, 2025, for a productive Scientific Committee meeting hosted by our project partner NIBIO. This event provided a great opportunity to review demo sites progress, share insights, and discuss the next steps. Below are the key highlights from the meeting:
1. Forest Demo Site Visit in Hurdal
The meeting kicked off with a visit to the forest demonstration site in Hurdal, Norway. The team climbed the impressive 42-meter ICOS eddy covariance flux tower, gaining a unique perspective on the forest’s carbon dynamics. From this height, we saw how NIBIO monitors Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) accumulation and understands how the forest “breathes.” This visit provided valuable context for the data being collected at all demo sites.

2. Demo Site Updates: Progress and Results
After the site visit, partners shared updates from all demo sites. The progress was impressive. Significant advances in monitoring carbon pools, SOC, and greenhouse gas emissions were highlighted. These include the use of advanced technologies like remote sensing, satellites, drones, and spectrometry to collect precise data. These results will be featured in an upcoming Comprehensive Paper, showcasing the key findings and progress of the MRV4SOC project.

3. Next Steps for MRV4SOC
Looking ahead, the focus will be on refining the data collected during the first two years of monitoring. The team is also planning further engagement with local stakeholders, policymakers, and communities to ensure that MRV4SOC’s impact and dissemination is wide-reaching and effective in addressing climate change.
The meeting in Oslo was both productive and inspiring. The progress made so far is impressive, and with continued collaboration, the MRV4SOC project is well-positioned to deliver sustainable solutions for land management and carbon sequestration.
