The MRV4SOC newsletter issue 2 is out now! This latest edition highlights major updates from the MRV4SOC project, including developments in EU carbon farming policy, baseline methodology, and scientific research.
On 6 December 2024, the European Union adopted its first voluntary framework for certifying carbon removals (EU/2024/3012). This regulation aims to boost investments in carbon removal technologies, promote sustainable agricultural practices, and prevent greenwashing. A key element is the definition of baselines—the performance of comparable practices under similar environmental and geographic conditions—to calculate net carbon removals or soil emission reductions.
During the 2nd European Carbon Farming Summit (ECFS 2025) in Dublin, MRV4SOC Project Coordinator Marta Gómez Giménez presented the project’s approach to baselines. Three lessons were shared:
-
Simulated carbon sequestration outcomes vary significantly by soil type, scale, and management.
-
Major uncertainties stem from carbon input estimates, selected carbon pools, and regional data.
-
Remote sensing can help scale point-based simulations to landscape level using vegetation and soil indicators.
MRV4SOC also contributed to five sessions at ECFS 2025, showcasing its leadership in evidence-based carbon farming.
