The Soil Monitoring Law, aimed at establishing healthy, resilient soils across Europe by 2050 has been approved by the European Parliament.

What does this mean?

  • Introduce EU-wide monitoring systems to assess the physical, chemical and biological condition of soils, ensuring that data is comparable across Member States.
  • Target key issues such as land-take, soil sealing (e.g., covering fertile land with concrete/asphalt), contaminated sites, and emerging pollutants like PFAS, microplastics and pesticides.
  • Provide a common methodology and support tools for Member States to implement sustainable soil management practices.
