Welcome to the fourth edition of the MRV4SOC newsletter!

Over the past months, MRV4SOC shifted from “setting the scene” to showing the method at work, connecting baselines, models and measurements into a practical MRV pathway for soil organic carbon across Europe.

From the policy-facing discussions at the European Carbon Farming Summit in Dublin, to the scientific exchanges at EGU 2025 in Vienna, to the presentation of the results of its first phase at the European Mission Soil Week 2025, in Aarhus, Denmark.

Over the past period, consortium updates documented steady progress across demo sites, while the project’s technical outputs continued to mature.

In December 2025, a timely General Assembly in Florence, right as soil policy focus became more and more central, helped grounding the project’s “hybrid modelling” ambition in real fields and real practices during the visit to the Fagna experimental farm.

Science Behind MRV4SOC: Two new inteviews are out

In this interview, we meet Dr. Maria Fantappiè, PhD, Lead Technologist at CREA-AA (Florence, Italy) and partner of the European project MRV4SOC. Dr. Fantappiè also shares her personal motivation and passion for soils, highlighting their fundamental role in food production, water regulation, biodiversity, and climate resilience, as well as the growing public awareness driven by new European policies on carbon farming and soil health.

In this interview, we speak with Bas van Wesemael, Emeritus Professor in Physical Geography at UCLouvain (Belgium) and partner of the European project MRV4SOC. Professor van Wesemael explains his role within MRV4SOC, focusing on data acquisition, remote sensing, and greenhouse gas modelling, and reflects on his long-standing research on soil organic carbon, a topic that has shaped his academic career since his PhD.

This conversation highlights how soil organic carbon represents a powerful win-win solution for climate action, sustainable farming, and soil health.

The Stakeholder Engagement Group within EU Mission Soil Cluster continues its work
Since launching the Working Group on Stakeholder Engagement Approaches within the EU Mission Soil Cluster in mid-July, MRV4SOC, together with ISLANDR, has helped turn an initial exchange into a structured, hands-on collaboration. The group has continued to meet and coordinate regularly, steadily moving from sharing practices to shaping practical tools and guidance that can support projects in planning and delivering meaningful stakeholder engagement. This work has progressed in connection with the two parallel working groups on stakeholder categorisation and mapping, ensuring alignment. The next meeting is scheduled for early February, where we will consolidate the outputs developed so far and define the next steps for 2026.

MRV4SOC General Assembly in Florence, Italy
In December 2025, MRV4SOC partners met in Florence at a moment when results are accelerating and the work on the ground is becoming increasingly tangible. The meeting offered one more opportunity to connect the dots between methodologies, data and applications, as the demonstration sites continue to advance their findings and deliver meaningful insights.

Understanding MRV4SOC - Agrosoil Glossary
"Monitoring Period"
A period, the duration of which is determined in according to the type of carbon removal activity, over which the storage of carbon is monitored by the operator.

MRV4SOC Land Use 3/6
"Agroforestry"
"Agroforestry"
In agroforestry, woody perennials, like trees, shrubs, palms, etc., are grown on the same land-management units as crops and animals. The different land use is arranged spatially or in temporal sequences. In these systems, there are both ecological and economic interactions between the different components.
